The ND FFA Foundation is committed to supporting projects that build agricultural literacy and create meaningful, real-world experiences for students across North Dakota. Through our partnership with the North Dakota Department of Agriculture, the Ag in the Classroom mini-grant program funds innovative learning opportunities.
This large-scale event puts safety front and center by teaching students how to be aware of their surroundings, avoid hazards, and make smart decisions both on and off the farm.
Program: Bottineau County Progressive Agriculture Safety Day
Facilitator: Sara Clemens, Bottineau County Extension
Impact: 210 students, 45 volunteers
Purpose: Promote safe behaviors in youth through applied learning experiences.
Objectives:
- Engage students in safety awareness across various agricultural and rural scenarios
- Provide real-world applications for identifying and responding to risks
- Foster community partnerships and support through volunteer involvement
- Introduce youth to public service and safety careers through interactive stations
Students learn first aid basics at a hands-on safety station.
Grant funds were used to rent the Bottineau County Fairgrounds to provide a suitable space for all 210 students and 45 volunteers participating in the event. Thirteen interactive safety stations were set up and facilitated by partners including NDSU Extension staff from Renville and Pierce Counties, Bottineau County Emergency Management, Bottineau Ambulance, North Central Electric Cooperative, the Pipeline Safety Alliance, Bottineau FFA Chapter, and others.
The event received coverage in the local newspaper and was praised for its broad community outreach and educational impact.
Each year, Bottineau County’s event grows in strength thanks to dedicated volunteers, meaningful content, and the realistic approach that makes the lessons stick. With students leaving more aware and prepared, the ripple effect of agricultural literacy and safety awareness continues to grow.
