Wendy Montgomery – Small Animal Production and Care Proficiency

When Wendy Montgomery of the Minot FFA Chapter heard that the Souris Valley Humane Society needed volunteers, she jumped at the chance.  She was only 12 years old at the time and knew that if she did a good job volunteering, she could apply for a job when she turned 16.  The Souris Valley Humane Society is a non-profit organization which houses approximately 31 dogs and 40 cats at the kennel.  They have three adoption rooms and one cat socialization room.

Kristine Seabolt, manager at the Souris Valley Humane Society, said, “As a four year volunteer, Wendy displayed a true passion for our animals.  She donated over 2,000 hours caring for the animals from walking dogs to cleaning kennels.  Wendy set out to prove to the entire staff that she could be counted on, easily balancing the demands of school with her volunteer work.  The day she turned 16, we hired her as a kennel attendant.”

As a kennel attendance, Wendy now has many more responsibilities including giving shots to animals, cleaning and sanitizing kennel areas, assisting with fundraising, doing the laundry, helping customers, and aiding volunteers.

Wendy would like to become a veterinarian in the future or go into some kind of animal field.

The Small Animal Production and Care Proficiency awards are sponsored by the North Dakota Veterinary Medical Association.
