Torie Krull – Fruit Production Proficiency Award Winner

by Melissa Mitchell

The winner of the ND FFA Fruit Production Proficiency Award is Torie James Krull of the Richland 44 FFA Chapter.  Torie, who will be a senior at the high school in Colfax next year, has gained recognition for his work with fruit.  Last year he won the Diversified Horticulture Entrepreneurship Proficiency award for his home garden.

Since his last success Torie has learned how to grow his plants more efficiently in this region.  His skills include fruit planting, weeding, canning, and processing.  In the summer, he grows watermelon, tomatoes, cantalope, apples, and chokecherries which he sells door to door in and around his community.  He also spends time in the kitchen with his mother improving his cooking skills.  He now knows how to make salsa and has learned how to make jelly from apple and chokecherry trees.

“I make about 200 quarts of jelly a year.  I usually just take donations for the jelly because I can’t sell it because I’m lacking USDA approval.  I also have canned tomatoes,” said Torie.

In the future Torie plans to attend North Dakota State University and return to Colfax to become an agriculture education teacher for Richland High School .  He also plans to be a part-time cook for a restaurant.

The Fruit Production Proficiency awards are sponsored by the ND FFA Foundation.
