Lynsey Frey-Diversified Livestock Production Entrepreneurship Proficiency Award Winner

The future is Bright for Lynsey

Lynsey Frey, a bright 18 year old from the Granville FFA Chapter said, “Growing up on the family farm provided me with the opportunity to raise registered Colombia sheep and registered Black and Red Angus cattle.”

Little did she know how far this opportunity would take her. Lynsey started out with a Colombia lamb which was purchased by her uncle as a 4-H project. In addition, she purchased her own cow as an elementary student to start her registered Black Angus herd.

As Lynsey became older, she decided to use both her sheep and cattle in her Supervised Agriculture Experience (SAE) program.  She has now been raising Colombia sheep for ten years and registered Angus cattle for eleven years. Lynsey currently serves as the 2005-2007 National Junior Colombia Association Secretary, the 2005-2007 ND Junior Angus Association President, 2005-2006 ND Junior Angus Association Princess, and the 2006-2007 ND Junior Red Angus Association Queen.

When she started, Lynsey’s goals were to expand her herd by breeding replacement ewes and heifers and purchasing high-quality females from state and national shows. Lynsey also wanted to learn how to properly fit her animals for show and to improve the quality of her flock and herd by selecting quality bulls and rams to breed. Lynsey said “I wanted to be able to sell high performance rams through state and national sheep sales and high performance bulls through our annual production sale in February of each year.” Lynsey is currently raising 125 herd of registered Colombia sheep and 47 head of registered Black and Red Angus cattle.

The future is bright for Lynsey as she plans to major in Animal and Range Science and Pre-Veterinary at NDSU. In the future Lindsey would like to earn an acceptance to Iowa State University or Kansas State University for veterinarian school and then later move home to open her own vet clinic.
