Lee Widdle-Beef Production Entrepreneurship Proficiency Award Winner

 Holy Cow

Lee Widdle, 19 years old, from the Minot FFA Chapter has always had a love for agriculture and animals. Lee bought his first heifer when he was only six years old but soon realized it wasn’t enough. Lee wanted to own his own herd one day, so he applied for a loan through FSA for $5,000 to buy four cows, two heifers, and one bull.

When Lee first started out, he had no idea just how big he wanted his herd to be, but as a freshman he set a goal to own 35 head by his senior year. Another goal for Lee was to keep better records and to make his herd more productive. After discussing the advantages and disadvantages of artificial insemination with his family, he decided to utilize this technique.

Lee has also learned great skills such as vaccination, castrating, branding, pulling calves, livestock judging, artificial insemination, and also to operate machinery.

As a result the success of Lee’s first loan, he was approved for a $350,000 farm start up loan and used the money to purchase 1,520 acres of farm and ranch land. Lee also received a $30,000 loan to buy cattle.

Lee reached most of his personal goals his senior year as he bought 1,520 acres and expanded his herd to 44 animals. As for Lee’s future goals, he plans on finishing his degree in agriculture economics at NDSU and is also planning to fill out an application for the American FFA Degree and American Star Farmer Award in 2009 using the beef production SAE for qualification. Lee’s long range goal and dream is to run both the family farm and the ranch.

The Beef Production Entrepreneurship proficiency awards are sponsored by the North Dakota Stockmen’s Association.
