Kylie Cirks- Equine Science Entrepreneurship Proficiency Award Winner

Horse Trainer

Kylie Cirks is a 17 year old senior from the Richland 44 FFA Chapter in Colfax , ND . She first became interested in horses as a young girl when she visited a neighbor who had many horses of different ages. There Kylie’s interest grew stronger as she started to halterbreak her neighbor’s yearlings. After a couple of years she decided to purchase a horse of her own, but due to a traumatic accident she had to sell it. “I was devastated,” said Kylie.

At that time she felt she needed more knowledge about horses, so she obtained a job at the Sandhills Equine Center .

Kylie’s Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) is based on the jobs and services she has had with horses. Kylie enjoys learning about the behavior of horses and wants to learn as much as possible about training horses. Kylie’s knowledge and skills have expanded dramatically because of her research and experiences.

In order for her business to be successful, Kylie knew she had to do a good job promoting herself. Kylie started by getting involved in selling and training horses and offering horse services. Twenty horses are currently on her farm. In three months Kylie plans to train twenty horses for about $5,000 while holding a second job.  Kylie said “Working at the Sandhills Equine Center I have learned so much including what it takes to keep the facility running.” Kylie also visited other trainers for information on the techniques used for horse training.
