Kevin Leier Wins State Specialty Animal Production Proficiency

Since 1996, Kevin Leier has worked side by side with his father on their buffalo ranch, Heartland Bison Ranch, located 22 miles south of Rugby .  Kevin’s official title is Herdsman.  His main objective is to help with the raising and care of the herd.  In addition, he has also become involved with the ND Buffalo Association and the national association.

Kevin began with one heifer calf as payment for his work on the farm in 2000.  Because his father works in town full-time, Kevin learned all aspects of raising bison.  Skills he’s learned include marketing, feed rationing, installation and maintenance of fence, recordkeeping, vaccinating, and dehorning.

Kevin is looking forward to a future with bison.  He said, “This past year I have had the opportunity to expand my operation.  I purchased seven female bison - two of which are bred cows and five are two-year old heifers.  After doing a lot of research on herd genetics, I found seven new females that will do a great job as well as make a strong foundation for my herd.  I feel now I have an extremely strong start to my herd, and with the industry looking better every year I feel the decision to expand happened at the right time.”

This Rugby High School graduate plans to attend the University of Mary and major in secondary education.  He plans to start his own ranch while attending college.

The Specialty Animal Production Proficiency awards are sponsored by Bryan and Janet Strom.
