Kali Lueck Wins State Sheep
Production Entrepreneurship Award
Not By “Shear” Luck
Kali Lueck’s accomplishments are an outstanding example of what can be
achieved through self initiative and hard work. This junior from Hettinger
started her Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) program when she was in
seventh grade with the purchase of two Southdown ewes. Because her family
lives in town, she needed to keep the sheep on her friend’s farm. As her
flock grew, she needed additional space, so she leased a 40 acre farmstead and
with the help of her family, built a barn and corrals. Kali’s sheep
flock currently consists of 22 ewes and 4 rams. Through selective
breeding, she has consistently improved the quality of her herd, and last summer
she won the Supreme Breed Banner at the ND State Fair. Kali has started to
sell breeding stock and also markets her lambs for slaughter directly to the
consumer. Kali’s commitment to excellence isn’t limited to her sheep
production. She is the Hettinger FFA Chapter President and has
participated in many contests and activities. Kali plans to eventually go
to medical school.
The Sheep Production
Entrepreneurship Proficiency awards are sponsored by the North Dakota Grocers’
Association.
