Jennifer Behm-Beef
Production Placement Proficiency Award Winner Jennifer Behm, a 17 year
old student from the Des Lacs-Burlington FFA Chapter, lives on a family farm
where they currently have 500 cow/calf pairs. She has been involved with the
raising of these cattle for many years. During the winter months, when the
cows are home from the pasture, she helps feed silage, grain, and hay. Because she works with
cattle most of the time, she thought it would be a good idea to start a
Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) program in this area. “When I look at
how our farm has prospered, I feel a sense of achievement.” said Jennifer. When first starting, some
of Jennifer’s biggest goals were to learn the responsibilities of properly
managing a beef farm. Another goal was to improve the machinery and shelters and
have warm bedded barns available at all times in case of storms. “With these
goals some deaths can be prevented,” said Jennifer. One of the advantages that
Jennifer has is that her uncle is a veterinarian, who is only too happy to give
her advice on how to properly give vaccinations, help with calving, and take
care of other illnesses that occur in the herd. Overall, Jennifer believes that
her experience on a farm has helped her overcome difficult obstacles in life
that many others would not have been able to. It has also taught her good
work ethics that will help her succeed in the future. “Jennifer has a
tremendous interest in the beef industry and it has helped her excel,” said
Mr. Richard Sabol, Jennifer’s chapter advisor. Mr. Sabol also said,
“Jennifer has had many outstanding achievements and an unbelievable work
ethic; she is one of those students that stand above the rest.” The Beef Production
Placement Proficiency awards are sponsored by the ND Stockmen’s Association. By: Melissa Mitchell |
