Chelsie Berndt – Equine Science Placement Proficiency Award Winner

Chelsie Berndt, a recent graduate from TGU Towner High School , began her SAE (Supervised Agricultural Experience) in 2002 while working on her family ranch, XC Ranch.  She began by breaking one horse, a registered American Paint mare, and that led to breaking all of the horses on the ranch.  In addition to breaking the horses, Chelsie has been responsible for the care of the other horses; exercising them, grooming them, feeding them, and vaccinating them.  The registered American Paint mare that she first started working with has become the horse she rides in rodeos.  She also plans to enter her in the Western Showmanship Class when Chelsie runs for North Dakota Prairie Rose Queen this month.

Chelsie has many goals she wants to accomplish; she will be attending NDSU in the fall and majoring in equine science.  After college, she would like to be employed as an equine massage therapist and chiropractor and operate her own horse ranch where she will raise and sell registered Quarter Horses and American Paint horses with rodeo and ranch bloodlines.

Chelsie’s parents have been very supportive throughout her SAE.  They have made it possible for her to work with horses everyday, and they have taken time out of their busy schedules to take her to rodeos to compete.  She also credit her agricultural education classes, “I have learned the different breeds of horses, the colors of horses, nutritional values for horses, and a vet science course that enabled me to be able to take care of horses when they are sick or injured.”

The Equine Science Placement Proficiency awards are sponsored by the ND Association of Agricultural Educators.
