April Schmidt - Outdoor Recreation
Save a Life
April Schmidt, a recent Napoleon graduate, knew that she wanted to become
a lifeguard for the Napoleon Park Board when she was 16. It didn’t
matter to her that this would take much training and a lot of determination.
To become a lifeguard, April first had to pass courses in first aid and CPR and
had to complete a course in lifeguard rescue techniques. With April’s
work ethic, these tasks were a piece of cake and she was soon learning skills
and obtaining knowledge to help with any of the tasks assigned to her.
In addition to her duties of cleaning, chlorinating, and supervising the
pool; April also began teaching swimming lessons and water aerobics classes.
She said, “I love working with kids which helped me make the decision to
become a certified Water Safety Instructor. It is a rewarding experience,
watching how your knowledge and teaching skills help children each day in
swimming lessons.”
April is working at the pool again this summer, working from sunup to
sundown. In the fall, she will attend
North Dakota
State
University
in
Fargo
and pursue a career in the medical field.
The Outdoor Recreation Proficiency awards are sponsored by the Larimore
FFA Chapter.
