Swine Production Placement Award
While attending NDSU, Amanda Montgomery from the Carrington FFA Chapter
decided to put her knowledge of swine production to use and applied for a
position at the
Swine
Research
Center
at NDSU in
Fargo
. She got the job and worked part-time this year, earning some money for
college and expanding her knowledge in swine production farrow-to-finish
operations. Amanda said, “I wanted to learn more about large hog
production operations. I only show pigs and farrow out a couple of sows a
year on the farm, so I wanted to be able to experience what larger swine
operations have to do to be profitable, as most hogs today are raised in large
factory hog farms.”
As indicated, Amanda has had quite a bit of experience in the show ring.
Her list of showmanship awards is large and includes awards for showing swine,
sheep, and cattle.
Her experiences working for the
Swine
Research
Center
taught her many skills: how to clip needle teeth and tails, how to castrate
pigs, how to sanitize and pressure wash stalls, and how to care for newborn
piglets.
