Kendra Hoger of the New
Salem FFA Chapter has been named the State FFA Ag Communications Proficiency
award winner for 2010. Kendra earned
her award at the ND State FFA Convention, held in
Fargo
,
ND
. She is a junior at the New Salem
–
Almont
High School
, in New Salem, ND.
Kendra’s Supervised
Agricultural Experience (SAE) project started out because, as her chapter
reporter, she saw a need for better communication in her local FFA chapter.
She developed a website for her chapter because, she explained, “I saw
a way for high school students to get the full results and schedules of our FFA
chapter judging contests online.”
She was able to create their first-ever website and made it easy to navigate.
While getting this project off the ground, Kendra was also writing
articles about her FFA Chapter for the New
Salem Journal. She has received
many accolades from her fellow students for her work.
As an FFA member, Kendra
has participated in parliamentary procedure, food science and attended the
National FFA Convention in
Indianapolis
,
IN.
She is currently serving as the District 7 Ambassador and was the 2008 Miss ND
Junior National Teenager.
Her parents are Wayne and
Diane Hoger, and her advisor is Shawn Feiring of the New Salem FFA Chapter.
The state sponsor for the
Ag Communications Proficiency awards is Dakota Plains Cooperative of Valley
City, Litchville, and LaMoure. The
national sponsors are BI – The Business Improvement Company and Keystone Steel
and Wire Company – Red Brand.
Jonathan Rush, a recent
graduate of
Rolla
High School
, won the Agricultural Education Proficiency award at the North Dakota State FFA
Convention in
Fargo
,
ND
held June 7-11. His participation in this area is based on his Supervised
Agricultural Experience (SAE) class.
Jonathan (Jon) has taken on the role of helping promote agriculture
education throughout his school. He has given presentations on such topics as
ATV safety. He has also created and completed a children’s alphabet book that
is filled with agriculture information. Development of his lessons includes
utilizing activities like board games to help students distinguish different
crop seed types. As part of this experience, Jon’s presentation and teaching
techniques have grown and improved. William
Fritz, Rolla’s agriculture educator, states, “Jon can take command of
younger students and teach them about the importance of agriculture. Many
students look up to Jon as a mentor.” Jon’s ability to lead a classroom will
serve him well as he attends
Minot
State
University
this fall to obtain a degree in physical education.
Jon was active in the FFA by participating in livestock judging, district
leadership conferences, and serving as chapter reporter, and secretary. His
other extra-curricular activities include football, basketball, and Relay for
Life.
The Ag Education Proficiency awards are sponsored on a state level by the
ND Association of Agriculture Educators. The
national sponsors are the James F. Lincoln Arc Welding Foundation and the
Lincoln Electric Company.
Cory Knutson, a member of
the Napoleon FFA Chapter and recent graduate, received the Ag Mechanics Design
and Fabrication Proficiency award at the State FFA Convention in
Fargo
,
ND
. Cory began this Supervised
Agricultural Experience (SAE) program in 2008 when he started working at Chris
Sperle Construction.
Cory has learned many skills as a carpenter for Chris Sperle Construction.
Some of the skills include how to sheetrock, frame walls, replace
windows, build a frame for a basement, side a house, lay and shingle a roof, and
install rafters and siding,
“The greatest aspect of this
occupation is the knowledge and experience gained from working day to day in the
carpentry world. I personally will
take the knowledge I learned and will use it for the rest of my life,” said
Cory.
The state sponsor for the Ag Mechanics Design and Fabrication Proficiency
awards is the James Valley Grain Elevator in Oakes.
The national sponsors are RAM Truck Brand and the Carry-On Trailer
Corporation.
Winning
the Ag Mechanics Energy Systems Proficiency award has proven that “hard work
does pay off” – this was an accomplishment Matthew Knudson achieved at this
year’s State FFA Convention. Throughout
the past four years Matthew has been actively involved with the Maddock A.S.
Gibbens FFA Chapter. Matthew has had
the positive support from his chapter members and family; Matthew’s father has
a career as an agronomist and his mother as a horticulturist.
Matthew
currently has a lawn service in which he has earned the respect of twenty
community members along with two local churches in which he mows cemetery plots.
Even though Matthew enjoyed his lawnmowing business, he was inspired to
look into becoming an electrician. He
was lucky enough to work under a close family friend Everett Hoffner, an
electrician. Under
Everett
’s leadership, Matthew was able to assist in wiring two houses, two shops, and
the electric bleachers at the
Maddock
Public School
.
Everett
was willing to provide Matthew with the opportunity to learn what he always
wanted to learn, the skills of an electrician.
Matthew is very happy with his decision in pursuing a career as an
electrician after high school.
The state
sponsor for the Ag Mechanics Energy Systems Proficiency awards OtterTail Power
Company. The national sponsors are
New Holland and the National FFA Foundation.
Colton Eichele, a member of the Fessenden/Bowdon FFA Chapter, has won the
Ag Mechanics Repair and Maintenance Entrepreneurship Award at the State FFA
Convention held in
Fargo
,
ND
.
Colton
won this award because of his restoration of an old tractor, which was given to
him by his grandfather.
Lane Moellenkamp,
Colton
’s FFA advisor, said, “One of the things that
Colton
enjoys doing is fixing things. When
Colton
received the gift of the tractor, he knew he wanted to find a motor for it and
make it run. With the help of a $500
Beginning SAE Grant from the ND FFA Foundation,
Colton
found a motor; and with the help of his dad and grandfather, restored the
tractor.”
Some of the skills
Colton
learned during the restoration included how to change a water pump, how to
adjust the timing on a motor, how to place an alternator, how to clean and
reassemble a carburetor, how to replace a starter, and how to change a fan belt.
Colton
has shown off his work by driving the tractor in parades last summer.
Colton
plans to graduate from high school in 2011 and
then go to NDSU and major in agricultural engineering.
The state sponsor for the
Ag Mechanics Repair and Maintenance Entrepreneurship Proficiency awards is Magic
City Implement in
Minot
. The national sponsors are the CME
Group and the National FFA Foundation.
Michael Bahm was recently announced as the winner of the Ag Mechanics
Repair and Maintenance Placement Proficiency award at the ND State FFA
Convention on the campus of NDSU in
Fargo
,
ND
. Daniel’s proficiency involved working at Twin City Implement in
Mandan
,
ND
in 2009.
Twin
City
Implement is owned and operated by Titan Machinery. Michael’s experience
included working with service technicians, parts, and sales.
Michael began his
proficiency with basic help duties such as cleaning up around the shop and
eventually moved on to assembly and repair of equipment. By the end of the
proficiency, Michael had moved on to fabrication/customization of metal parts
and working with service technicians on service calls.
Michael has been an FFA member since 2006. He has been active in the
Mandan FFA Chapter with the roles of chapter president, vice-president, and
assistant reporter at different points in his FFA career; he also organized and
established the Mandan FFA Toy Show.
Michael
has played an active chapter role in several other areas including numerous
leadership conferences and livestock and dairy cattle judging.
Michael was exposed to
working with tools at a young age and still has an interest in pursuing that
field. He hopes to use that experience in working towards a two-year degree with
the goal of a career in agricultural equipment sales.
The Ag Mechanics Repair and
Maintenance Placement Proficiency is sponsored by Butler Machinery Company on
the state level and by Hobart Welders on a national level.
At the 2010 FFA State Convention, Devin Barton, a recent graduate from
Carrington
High School
, was named the Agricultural Processing Proficiency award winner. Devin has been
working at his father’s meat processing facility, Barton Meats, since 2006.
Upon employment at Barton Meats, Devin worked mainly to help his father.
He cut paper, made labels, operated the meat grinder, sliced jerky, and helped
with clean-up; all without pay. The next summer, though, Devin was paid for his
work and was allowed to do boning and sausage making. Gradually, Devin’s
responsibilities expanded to operating all of the meat processing equipment,
helping customers, and operating the business alone on Saturday mornings.
Devin has been active in his FFA chapter by participating in pizza sales,
fruit sales, labor auction, crops show, and the ND State Fair ag mechanics
exhibits.
Devin plans to attend the University of North Dakota to pursue a four-year
degree in business management; he will play football for UND. After graduating,
he plans to continue living in
North Dakota
. The state sponsor of the Ag
Processing Proficiency awards is the ND Ag Products Utilization Commission.
The national sponsor is Archer Daniels Midland Company and CHS.
Nevada Turbiville, a junior at
Scranton
High School
, won the Agricultural Sales Entrepreneurship Proficiency award at the North
Dakota State FFA Convention in
Fargo
,
ND
held June 7-11. His participation in this area is based on raising and
producing registered Hampshires, commercial ewes, and club lambs.
Nevada
has been involved in sheep production since he
could help with the bum lambs, and his family has been involved in production
for over 20 years. This history has led
Nevada
to develop his own herd. He first
purchased 34 head of Columbia/Suffolk from a local sheep producer then purchased
58 purebred Hampshire ewes.
Nevada
markets his herd through sheep showing, as well as word of mouth. This has led
him to be able to sell many of his herd through private treaty and has sold 25
lambs in the last three years. He hopes to continue to build his herd’s
quality and size so he can sell across the state. Misty Steeke, Scranton FFA
advisor, said, “
Nevada
has always displayed a high degree of integrity, responsibility, and ambition
towards his operation.”
Nevada
has remained busy in high school
extra-curricular activities. His FFA participation has included agricultural
sales, range evaluation, ag communications, and chapter president; all of which
have contributed to his success in this proficiency. Other high school
activities include basketball, football, track, and Future Business Leaders of
America. He is also a member of the Range Riders 4-H club, the American
Hampshire Association, American Simmental Association, and American Angus
Association.
Upon graduation in 2011,
Nevada
wants to attend college to pursue a degree in engineering yet
still remain active in the ag industry by continuing to raise livestock.
The state sponsor for the Ag Sales Entrepreneurship Proficiency awards is
the Bank of Glen Ullin by Bob Spangelo. The
national sponsors are Channel Bio and Crop Production Services.
Brandon Lee, a recent graduate from
Wahpeton
High School
, won the Agricultural Sales Placement Proficiency award at the North Dakota
State FFA Convention in
Fargo
,
ND
held June 7-11.
Brandon
’s proficiency is based on the work he has completed for the ACE Hardware
store in Wahpeton since he began working there four years ago.
Brandon
’s work at the ACE Hardware store began as a
sales associate and outdoor power equipment mechanic, where he was responsible
for answering customers’ questions and repairing such equipment as lawn
mowers, weed eaters, chainsaws, and snow blowers. After a year at the store, he
was promoted to night shift manager and became responsible for overseeing other
employees. Since then, he has been promoted to the manager position, where he
supervises the 12 other employees.
Brandon
’s employer, Ted Pietron, stated, “
Brandon
takes his position very seriously and he keeps the best interest of my business
in mind.”
When
Brandon
wasn’t working at ACE Hardware, he was participating in many extracurricular
activities.
Brandon
has found success in the FFA in events such as ag sales and ag mechanics, both
of which can be connected to his time at ACE. He has also been involved in the
SERCTC Auto Tech Club, Skills USA, and football.
Brandon
’s future plans include attending
North Dakota
State
University
where he would like to obtain a degree in mechanical engineering. He has also
set his sights on obtaining a master’s degree in this area.
The state sponsor for the
Ag Sales Placement Proficiency awards is Farmers Union Service Association and
the national sponsors are Fastenal and Vigortone Ag Products.
Grayson Spangelo,
Hebron
, won the ND FFA Agricultural Service Proficiency award at the State FFA
Convention, held recently on the NDSU campus in
Fargo
.
Grayson, a graduate of
Hebron
High School
, began his quest for the award six years ago, when he began a lawn mowing
business, ‘Lawns by Grayson,’ in his hometown. The business started to fill
the need of many elderly residents for quality lawn care and quickly expanded
from just the elderly to include city parks and cemeteries. As word spread of
his service, Grayson added equipment and employees.
When custom harvesters discontinued serving the area in 2008, Grayson
responded by starting ‘Big Lawns by Grayson’, purchasing a used combine and
leasing trucks. His reputation for quality service brought many customers and
necessitated purchasing another combine in 2009. He attributes much of his
success to his hard work and his thirteen part-time employees.
Grayson has been active in band, pep band, drama club, student council,
basketball, football, golf and FFA. Since his involvement began in FFA four
years ago, he has received numerous FFA awards including Star Greenhand, Chapter
Star Agri-businessman, district winner in Wildlife Management Proficiency,
Agricultural Services Proficiency, Ag Sales Entrepreneurship Proficiency,
district and state winner in Turf Grass Management Proficiency, and now is the
district and state winner in Ag Services Proficiency area.
Grayson
plans to attend NDSU, majoring in agribusiness. The Ag Services
Proficiency award is sponsored on the state level by the ND Grain Dealers
Association and on the national level by Agricredit Acceptance and the National
FFA Foundation.
Cassandra Hanson was named
the 2010 State FFA Beef Entrepreneurship Proficiency winner. Cassandra is a
recent graduate and member of the Enderlin FFA Chapter and is currently enrolled
at the North Dakota Sate College of Science, working towards her nursing degree.
She started her proficiency project in 1999 when she purchased her first Angus
heifer; and in 2009 when she graduated, had a herd of over 45 head put together.
“She has an ingrained passion for the beef cattle industry,” says her
advisor Bob Moller. “She is deserving of recognition for her hard work and
love of agriculture.”
From the beginning
Cassandra knew that she wanted to be the one to choose what cattle would be
introduced to her program. As she participated in the Livestock Judging Career
Development Event, she not only developed an eye for good looking cattle, but
also good genetic cattle. From an early age she began studying EPD’s and
learning what all the numbers and acronyms stood for. By understanding the value
of EPD’s she was able to pick some of the best maternal cattle for her
program. Cassandra has also put this
knowledge to work in the show ring and has won several awards in
North Dakota
and the surrounding states for her prize show animals and her ability to show
these animals to their best potential.
Cassandra has learned a lot
about the beef industry through out her proficiency project such as knowledge
about heat detection, artificial insemination, and animal nutrition. Also she
has been able to take a lot of life lessons with her. After she graduates she
wants to meet a great guy and raise a family. She
said, “I would like to raise purebred cattle and raise a family in rural
North Dakota
and teach my family how hard work can pay off and the benefits of living and
working on a family farm.”
The state sponsor for the
Beef Production Entrepreneurship Proficiency awards is the ND Stockmen’s
Association. The national sponsors
are Bayer Animal Health and Nasco Division of Nasco International.
Wishek FFA member, Jonathan Ketterling is the state winner of the Beef
Production Placement Proficiency award given out at the ND State FFA Convention
in June. Jonathan has gotten his
experience in ranching from the family farm, Ketterling Ranch, owned by his
father and uncle. They raise
Red/Black Angus and Simmental beef cattle.
One
of the most important skills Jonathan has learned while working for Ketterling
Ranch has been the skill of artificial insemination of cattle.
He has seen how this technology is able to produce the best quality of
cattle with superior genetics. Jonathan
has also learned much about pasture management. “Pasture management has been a
difficult situation due to limited availability of pasture and sometimes weather
conditions. This goal is a
long on-going challenge,” said Jonathan.
Jonathan
would like to start a herd of cattle and exhibit at the local fair.
Rocky Brown, Wiskek FFA advisor, said, “Over the years, Jonathan has
developed skills that help in running a profitable and successful beef
operation. He has been involved with
his family’s beef operation his entire life, however, in the past couple of
years has really proven himself to be a vital part of the family business.”
The
state sponsor for the Beef Production Placement Proficiency awards is the ND
Stockmen’s Association. The
national sponsors are
Midwest
PMS and the National FFA Foundation.
Logan Wald, a recent
graduate from
Napoleon
High School
, is the winner of the State Dairy Production Entrepreneurship Proficiency award
at the State FFA Convention held in June in
Fargo
.
Logan
gained this award from his hard work on his family’s dairy farm near
Napoleon.
started helping out on his family’s dairy
farm when he was very young. He
began by spraying the cows with iodine solution that is used to clean the teats
before applying the milking machine. He
was too short at this time to connect the milking machines to the cows, but this
obstacle was overcome with the help of a little stool he would take from cow to
cow.
After years of helping out,
Logan
decided to borrow funds from the Farm Service Agency youth loan program in 2007
and purchased three
Holstein
heifers that had calves shortly after he purchased them.
This started
Logan
’s entrepreneurship endeavor to create his own herd.
Now
Logan
has paid off his initial loan and has increased his herd to four cows, two
heifer calves, four bull calves, and one bred heifer.
Logan
sells the milk to the Dairy Farmers of America Cooperative in Pollock, SD where
it is made into cheese.
Brian Schneider,
Logan
’s FFA advisor, said, “
Logan
has an excellent Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) program in dairy
production as well as farm placement. He
can complete all duties associated with their dairy farm and is capable of
running the dairy when his dad is not around.
He has a good head on his shoulders when it comes to the dairy production
area, can make good decisions, and is a huge asset to the family dairy
business.”
Logan
plans on attending Bismarck State College in
the fall and will be majoring in farm and ranch management.
After completing his college education, he would like to return to the
family farm and assist with the beef, dairy, and crop production and eventually
own a farm on his own.
The state sponsor for the
Dairy Production Entrepreneurship Proficiency awards is Midwest Dairy
Association – ND Division. The
national sponsors are DeLaval, Inc and New Holland.
The state winner of the 2010 Dairy
Production Proficiency award is Justin Fjellenger of the Rugby FFA Chapter.
Justin grew up on a dairy farm and always enjoyed working with cows from
the time he was small. Unfortunately,
in 2003, a fire destroyed his family's dairy facility, and they opted not to
rebuild. Justin wanted to remain
connected with the dairy industry, so in 2005 he began working on a neighboring
grain and dairy farm that has approximately 75 cows.
Initially his main responsibility was to feed the calves.
But as he got older and learned more, he took on a greater role at the
farm. He can now do the milking and
clean up from start to finish on his own, in addition to feeding the calves by
himself.
Justin just completed his
first year at
Dakota
College
in Bottineau, majoring in wildlife management.
After his graduation, he plans to transfer to another college for more
education and eventually operate a ranch or a dairy farm of his own.
Justin has been an active
member of the Rugby FFA and his community. He
was chapter secretary for one year and participated in various state contests.
He is currently working toward his American FFA Degree.
While in high school, he was a talented member of the wrestling team and
generously shared his skill by coaching the pee-wee wrestling team.
He was also a volunteer at the local food pantry and Relay for Life.
The Dairy Production
Placement Proficiency awards are sponsored by Midwest Dairy Association – ND
Division. The national sponsors are
Kuhn North America and GEA Farm Technologies.
Joe Berg,
Minot
was presented with the ND FFA proficiency award for Diversified Agricultural
Production at the recent State FFA Convention, held in
Fargo
on the campus of NDSU. The award recognizes Joe for his involvement with and
work on the Bow and Arrow Ranch and also includes his work at the NDSU
experiment station.
Starting
out with the goals of learning more about farming and ranching and helping his
grandfather and uncles be more productive on the farm and ranch, Joe says he
learned much about agriculture. He was able to advance from merely doing the
chores to crop scouting, soil testing, seeding, spraying, and harvesting. Joe,
who recently graduated from
Minot
High School
, was involved in a variety of activities during his high school career
including Character Counts, PALS, crop judging, basketball, track, Student
Council and FFA. He says his involvement in FFA allowed him to improve his
leadership and public speaking skills.
Currently,
Joe is employed with SunPrairie Grain in
Minot
. This fall, Joe plans to attend
North Dakota School of Science in Wahpeton, majoring in either crop production,
sales service, or farm and ranch management.
The proficiency award for
Diversified Agricultural Production is sponsored on a state level by the Lisbon
FFA Chapter and on a national level by the CME Group and the National FFA
Foundation.
Beau Buehler, a graduate of
Maddock
High School
, won the Diversified Crop Production award at the State FFA Convention in
Fargo
,
ND
. Beau is the son of Todd and Nadley Buehler of Oberon, ND. Beau raises soybeans
and malting barley.
Through the years Beau had to learn how to safely operate farm machinery,
plan for and schedule machinery operations, determine production practices, and
market his crops. He was able to exceed the average yield for soybeans in his
area of ND for the four years of his operation. His barley yields were average
to above average for the two years that he raised barley. Beau has learned that
there are times to market at harvest and other times to wait for better prices.
Beau was active in FFA,
winning a silver award in crops judging, gold officer as sentinel and reporter,
and the gold award in state food science competition for three years. He was
selected to represent the Maddock A. S. Gibbens FFA Chapter to receive the
National Two Star Gold Chapter award at the National FFA Convention. He was
active in high school basketball, football and track; winning the Hustle award
in basketball, MVP and hardest worker in track, and All Region Honorable Mention
in football. Beau has won state star awards in band and choir.
Beau is presently working toward an agribusiness degree at NDSU. He is
involved with Agribusiness Club, Saddle and Sirloin Club and Students Today
Leaders Forever at NDSU. After graduation he plans to start his own business
that will include farming, either as a full-time enterprise or as a part-time
business after graduation.
Kyle Erdmann of Carrington is the 2010 Diversified Crop Production
Placement Proficiency award winner, and his experiences have certainly been
diverse. Kyle has always been
interested in farming, but since his parents are not farmers, he didn't have an
obvious outlet for that interest. Fortunately,
in 2004 he had the opportunity to begin working for Larry Lura Farms, and since
then he has been exposed to almost every aspect of crop production.
Kyle's employer has 10,000
acres on which they use the latest equipment and technology to grow corn,
sunflowers, soybeans, wheat, pinto beans and navy beans.
Kyle's duties have included equipment maintenance, hauling grain,
combining, driving tractor, operating the air seeder and more.
He has learned harvesting techniques such as moisture testing and proper
combine setting. Last summer, Kyle
also worked for Veen's Hay Service where he mowed, raked, baled, and stacked
hay. This year he hopes to gain some
exposure to the marketing of crops and understanding the financial aspects of
crop production. This would be
valuable experience, as Kyle hopes to eventually work in the ag finance
industry.
Kyle is currently a
freshman at BSC in
Bismarck
, pursuing a degree in agriculture industry technology.
Eventually he plans to attend NDSU and earn a degree in ag finance.
But Kyle has caught the "farming bug" and hopes to have a few
acres where he can raise some crops of his own.
His hard work ethic and positive attitude learned through FFA will
certainly help him succeed in the future.
The Diversified Crop
Production Placement Proficiency awards are sponsored by Steve and Cynthia
Strege. The national sponsors are
Crop Production Services and the National Crop Insurance Services.
Jodi Boe, a current member of the Beulah FFA Chapter, won the Diversified
Horticulture Proficiency award at the State FFA Convention in
Fargo
,
ND
. Jodi received this award because
of her work at the Beulah Ag Education Department Greenhouse and her care for
her family’s two acre lawn and garden.
Her plans after graduation
are to attend college in either agriculture or a biological phase of
engineering.
Jodi is active in her FFA
chapter, 4-H, FCCLA, band, and other school activities. She has participated in
many FFA Career Development Events such as crops judging, floriculture, quiz and
parliamentary procedure. In 2009 she attended the FFA Washington Leadership
Conference in
Washington
,
DC
.
The state sponsor for the
Diversified Horticulture Proficiency awards is the Wahpeton FFA Chapter; the
national sponsor is Nationwide Insurance Foundation.
At just 16 years of age,
the winner of the 2010 Diversified Livestock Production Proficiency award is
young. But Nick Germann of
Rhame
,
ND
, is also hard-working and goal-oriented, and as chapter FFA president, displays
leadership skills far above his age range.
Nick understands that it
takes a great amount of time and labor to successfully operate a diversified
livestock operation. It can also be
hard to turn a profit because of unstable sheep and swine prices.
But he hasn't let that stand in his way.
Last year, he partnered with his brother to build a farrowing barn and a
weaning barn. This has helped make
his operation more efficient. Nick's
SAE currently consists of about 30 crossbred sows and 20 Southdown ewes.
He also owns a boar that is housed in
Iowa
from which he sells semen to other breeders. He plans to sell about 100 show
pigs this year to 4-H and FFA students for shows during the summer.
His lamb crop has averaged over 160%.
From his earnings, he has been able to save money for college and
increase his operation.
Mary Fischer, Nick’s FFA
advisor, said, “Nick, has also been very active in showing at the state fair;
he is a very good showman and is very much respected by other FFA members across
the state with his showing abilities.”
Eventually Nick would like
to have a career as an electrician. But
since he has two years of high school left, he will first work toward his goal
of being one of the top recognized breeders in each of his respective livestock
areas. It will be exciting to see
what Nick will accomplish next. The state sponsors for the Diversified
Livestock Production Entrepreneurship Proficiency awards are Tammy Meyer and
Bernard and Jean Meyer. The national
sponsors are Tractor Supply Company and the Wahl Clipper Corporation.
John Behm who will be a senior
this fall at
Des
Lacs-Burlington
High School
, won the Diversified Livestock Production Placement Proficiency award at the
State FFA Convention in
Fargo
,
ND
. John has worked at the Behm Hereford Ranch all of his life, but his records
for the FFA proficiency area began in 2006 . He has responsibilities in caring
for the cow-calf herd and the boar goats. The Behm ranch is owned by four Behm
brothers; they calve out approximately 500 cows and 300 goats each year.
John’s duties include
assisting with harvesting hay, installing and maintaining fences and windbreak
fences, as well as feeding and caring for the cow-calf pairs and goats. These
activities have taught him the importance of attention to detail and good
records.
John has been active in
FFA, 4-H and his local community. He is an honor student, starred on the
football team, sings in the choir, and served on the student council. He is a
member of the ND Junior Hereford Association and the American Quarter Horse
Association. He has had the champion heifer at the Ward County Achievement Days

High quality grain, good
yields, and profit are what Vance Zacharias had hoped to achieve when he was
planning his Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE).
Vance met his goals and learned many skills to prove why he was selected
for the ND State FFA Fiber and Oil Crop Production Proficiency winner.
Vance has been working for
and now farming with Future Vision Partnership, his parent’s partnered farm,
for over nine years. In that time he
was able to buy 393 acres from his uncle, starting his own farming career.
Vance understands how the business runs and is involved in management.
Vance explains, “We meet on a yearly basis to determine the levels of
achievement of my goals and to set new goals for the upcoming year.”
He understands that growing
soybeans is not always an easy task. Dealing
with flooding, weather, pests, and a crude oil pipeline built across his
property are a few things Vance has found as difficulties when farming.
However, with the help of his fellow coworkers and family he is able to
rent facilities and equipment, and have help with production and management of
his crops which gives him a few advantages when starting out.
At various times of the year you’ll find Vance caring for his farm by
planting, spraying, and harvesting, and using various marketing plans for his
soybeans.
During Vance’s high
school career he has been active in band, choir, National Honor Society, student
council, speech, and numerous math competitions.
In his community he was involved in his community band, church and its
youth activities, Governor’s Youth Council, and
Academic
All
State
. Vance also was extremely active in
his FFA chapter; he participated in many conferences and conventions,
fundraising, and many competitions. He
held various chapter offices including a two-year term as president.
Vance took his real world experience to the mat as he was a member of the
crops judging team where he was named Top Crops Judger of the Enderlin FFA.
Vance has started building a resume that will impress any employer who
comes across it.
Vance plans on attending
NDSU to pursue a double major in ag economics and ag systems management.
He would like to intern with an innovative farm or company during the end
of his college career. He hopes to
one day return to the farm and be an active partner and maybe someday CEO of
Future Visions. Vance is someone
that deserves congratulations for his outstanding achievement!
However, watch out for Vance; he is far from done!

held June 7-11. His participation in this area is based on the time he has
spent assisting in his family’s bison ranch, Eagle Valley Bison Ranch.
To maintain the herd of 100
head, the ranch has to put up 1200 hay bales and 700 corn bales. Since he was
eight years old, Mitchel has been helping put up hay for the bison.
As Mitchel has grown, so have his responsibilities. Putting in an average
of 1000 hours each haying season, Mitchel has learned many skills including
driving semi truck, fixing machinery, and cutting and baling hay.
Recently, he has been granted the responsibility of managing the ranch by
himself.
His FFA judging activities are comprised of judging livestock, crops, and ag
mechanics. While being active in the community in the Boy Scouts of America and
Catholic Youth Organization, he has also participated in other extracurricular
activities including basketball, football, track, choir, and baseball.

“Growing up, I have always loved spending time outside on the farm and
riding with my dad in the tractor”, explains Brianna Johnson, a recent
graduate of
Des
Lacs-Burlington
High School
. It is no wonder why these
“rides” Brianna took growing up were the start to a deep passion for the
farm and a work experience that led her to be the 2010 state winner of the Grain
Production Placement Proficiency award.
Brianna grew up on a grain and
cattle farm. Working closely with
the entire family, the Johnson’s operate on 1500 acres of crop land, along
with their 100 head of cattle on 1200 acres of pasture land.
Brianna applies chemical, harrows and uses the chisel plow and disc for
fall tillage, drives truck, combines, and unloads grain into the bins.
Brianna also assists with spraying, bales to clear residue and straw, and
samples grain. “Harvest time is my
favorite time of the year”, explains Brianna, “Time is precious, and money
and the weather is unpredictable”. Beyond
her farm work, Brianna helps take care of the cattle.
She and her siblings help feed, fence, calve out, and work cattle.
Her father relies on them, and her work ethic and experience have made
her a reliable employee.
Brianna’s FFA career was
filled with fundraising, conferences, competitions, and chapter offices.
Brianna was also a member of the crops judging team.
She was named Top Crops Judging Team Member and District 2 High
Individual Crops Judger. Brianna was
also her chapter president this past year. Outside
of FFA in school Brianna was in basketball, volleyball, track, student council,
National Honor Society, and band. She
also made time to be active in 4-H and her church youth group.
Brianna plans to attend
Concordia
College
in
Moorhead
,
MN
this fall, majoring in secondary education.
She would like to return to a small town and farm after graduation and
teach, similar to her mom. Brianna
would also like to run a small herd of cattle along with her teaching career.
Another goal is earning her American FFA degree.
“That will be a great ending to a very successful FFA career,” said
Brianna. She took advantage of
opportunities that were right outside her door that others would have stepped
over.

community through many different avenues.
Erin
is an embodiment of the final line of the FFA
motto, “living to serve.”
Erin
’s involvement in community service projects has been increasing since she
began actively volunteering since she was a freshman. Since beginning in this
area,
Erin
has dedicated over 200 hours of her time to community development projects. She
has volunteered at the Daily Bread food pantry and
Trinity

is grounded in her desire to be a positive role model for the younger students
around her. As she has grown, so have her leadership abilities. She has
dedicated over 150 hours to her school by serving in multiple leadership
positions for different organizations. She also participated in a mission trip
to assist in the Hurricane Katrina relief effort. She states, “Helping others
has always been a major focus to me. I am able to make a difference in my

It’s
a Dirty Job, But Leingang Does it Well
North Dakota
’s Soil Conservation Districts (SCDs) work
hard to educate residents about the benefits of planting tree rows as wind and
snow breaks. Once a resident is convinced, SCD employees either go out to the
property to plant trees or package the requested varieties for the property
owner to plant. This year’s Nursery Operations Proficiency winner, Waylon
Leingang, has learned a lot about trees and tree-planting equipment in his
Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) with the McLean County Soil
Conservation District.
During his SAE, Waylon
sorted and packed trees for land-owners and worked with the tree-planter and
fabric machines. In his third year at the SCD, he also did repairs to the grass
drill, mixed seed and marked rows for tree-planting. According to Waylon,
“When riding the fabric machine, you must have fairly quick reactions. Getting
the hang of it didn’t take long, and after awhile I was pretty good at it.”
Glen Huettl, Waylon’s
instructor at the Garrison FFA Chapter, concurs. “In everything from equipment
operation to knowledge about trees, Waylon has grown from this experience,”
says Glen. “He is a hard-working, self-driven and responsible student who is
willing to accept any challenge.”
Waylon is a recent graduate
of
Garrison
High School
; he plans to go on to college to learn mechanics. Having just completed his
fourth year of FFA,
Wayne
’s many accomplishments include the 2009 State Forest Management Proficiency,
District Forest Management Proficiency awards in 2008 and 2009, and the 2009
District Environmental Science and Natural Resource Management Proficiency
award. He was the 2009 Star Chapter Farmer, and has also earned medals three
consecutive years at the District Leadership Conference, served as a volunteer
for the McLean County Ag Show, and participated in the last four FFA fruit
sales. In addition, he takes care of all the livestock on his family farm and
has built his own herd of 15 ewes.
Waylon is the son of Tom
and Carol Leingang of Garrison. The Nursery Operations Proficiency awards
are sponsored by Joel and Lois Janke on a state level; and RAM Truck Brand and
the National FFA Foundation are national sponsors.
Maria Hager, who has just finished her junior year at
Kenmare
High School
, was this year’s winner of the Outdoor Recreation Proficiency award at the
State FFA Convention. Maria’s work at the Kenmare Pool has given her great
satisfaction in educating swimmers how to be safe and have fun. She has not only
become a certified lifeguard, but she has taken additional courses to be a
certified Water Safety Instructor.
Maria began her work as a
lifeguard in the spring of 2008. She has taken many classes to ensure that she
is able to respond to an emergency. As a Water Safety Instructor, Maria is able
to teach swimming lessons and other water safety courses. Pool employees are
also trained in testing the chemical levels of the water and maintaining
cleanliness of the pool and facilities. Karen Medlang, Kenmare Public Pool
manager, says Maria has shown exceptional leadership and respect to everyone she
works with.
As an honor student Maria
has participated in numerous activities including band, drama, volleyball, and
Academic Olympics just to name a few. She has been an active participant in the
Kenmare FFA Chapter for the past three years, holding the position of vice
president, president, and also serving as the District 1 Ambassador. She has
attended both the State and National FFA Conventions. After her graduation next
spring, Maria plans on attending college to pursue a degree in nursing with an
emphasis in pediatrics.
The state sponsor of the
Outdoor Recreation Proficiency awards is the Larimore FFA Chapter.
The national sponsor is the Cabellas.
Aasand
Spreads His Eggs Among Many Baskets
Kyle Aasund knows poultry.
Having been raised on a poultry farm that produces large exotic poultry such as
ostriches and emus, Kyle’s interest developed naturally from the family
business. Kyle began working with
chickens as a 10-year-old when his dad bought 50 chickens to raise and butcher.
In 2008, he began buying his own laying chickens. Five varieties of poultry,
including multiple breeds in some categories, made up his Supervised
Agricultural Experience (SAE) Program.
“I raise a variety of
poultry,” said Kyle. “I don’t like to put ‘all of my eggs in one
basket.’”
Over the years, Kyle has
learned a number of skills and competencies and developed his knowledge of the
poultry he raises. Use of special feed rations has increased his flock’s egg
production; use of laying racks has also contributed to greater egg yield. Kyle
has also learned a great deal about appropriate housing, bedding and use of
appropriate environment—such as installation of a small pond in the goose
pen—to improve the health and welfare of his flock. He shows several varieties
of poultry at the annual Foster County Fair; one of his roosters earned 2009
Grand Champion Rooster and won both the market and showmanship classes.
“Poultry will always be a
part of Kyle’s life, regardless of his future career,” said Joel Lemer,
Kyle’s FFA instructor. “He is a very grounded student who will be successful
in whatever future career he decides to pursue.”
Kyle participated in
numerous FFA activities during his freshman and sophomore years. He exhibited in
the Ag Mechanics Division at the
Foster
County
and state fairs, participated in the State Crop Show and attended the State FFA
Convention and the District Leadership Conference. Kyle has just completed his
sophomore year at
Carrington
High School
and expects to graduate in May 2012. He plans to attend
North Dakota
State
University
to obtain a pre-vet degree in preparation for transfer to a veterinary college.
Ultimately, Kyle wants to own his own veterinary clinic in a rural
North Dakota
community.
Kyle is the son of Dean and
Deedra Aasand of Carrington. The Poultry Production Proficiency awards are
sponsored on a state level by USDA Farm Service Agency and on a national level
by the Tractor Supply Company and the National FFA Foundation.
Danielle Buskohl, who will be a senior at
Wyndmere
High School
this fall, won the Sheep Production Proficiency award at the State FFA
Convention in
Fargo
,
ND
. Danielle (Dani) started working on
her proficiency her seventh grade year but has been part of the family operation
since she can remember.
Dani has been employed at Buskohl Feedlot for many years and
enjoys working on her family’s operation.
They started many years ago with 200 head and are currently feeding over
8,600 lambs per year. Her duties
have grown over the years as well. When
she first started, she mainly opened and closed gates for others that were
running the machinery and feeding, but now her duties are very broad.
She helps with vaccinations, loading and hauling sheep, operating all the
equipment, and treating sick animals.
Dani has not only kept herself busy on the feedlot, but she
has been very involved in school and community leadership activities and sports.
Emily Steckler, Dani’s FFA advisor stated in a reference letter,
“Besides being an asset to Buskohl Farms, she is also an important part of the
Wyndmere FFA Chapter. She is looked
up to by younger members and serves as a role model.”
Danielle has many goals but states that her short term goal
is to attend a four year college to major in elementary education, and her long
term goal is to begin her teaching career and in conjunction be able to raise
livestock.
The state sponsor for the Sheep Production Proficiency awards
is the ND Grocers Association. The
national sponsors are the National FFA Foundation and Bimeda, Inc.
Mikali
Talbot, daughter of
Chad
and Kristine Talbot from Max, is the state winner of the Small Animal
Production and Care Proficiency award given at the State FFA Convention
recently. Mikali started working at
Daisy Hill Poodles in the summer of 2009, cleaning the runs and changing puppy
pens. Eventually, she was given more
complicated tasks such as taking the dogs out, giving them baths, clipping their
nails, and helping with vaccinations.
Linda
Berg, owner of Daisy Hill Poodles, said, “Mikali has demonstrated that she’s
versatile, adaptable and dependable. She
started with the basic daily-care tasks and gradually added more complex
responsibilities. From the very
beginning, she has been very dependable in caring for our dogs.”
The Small Animal Production and Care Proficiency awards are sponsored by
Bryan and Janet Strom. The national
sponsor is Merial.
Keller
Specializes in Miniatures
On first glance it might appear that Kristine Keller’s herd is at quite
a distance. It’s not. She raises miniature horses—perfectly formed horses
that are the size of small ponies. Kristine’s first miniature horse was a mare
given to her by her parents for her eleventh birthday. “After my mare’s
first foal was born,” said Kristine, “I decided I wanted to continue and
expand with this aspect of the horse industry.”
The Specialty Animal
Production Proficiency state award was presented to Kristine at the State FFA
Convention because of her hard work and determination.
Kristine was already
familiar with the horse industry, having herself been raised on her parents’
Coulee Hills Ranch. “I have always
had an additional love for the Arabian horses that we owned and tried to
participate in everything horse-related,” she said. Since receiving her first
mare, Kristine has acquired four more mares and a stallion to form a herd that
she operates and breeds apart from her parents’ large herd. She works
alongside her father to produce the hay and grain she uses to feed her herd.
Kristine has also worked with her mother to learn the fine points of marketing,
and uses photographs she posts on the Internet to help promote her foals for
sale.
“Kristine is a very
active member of the Harvey FFA,” said her instructor, Wade Anderson. “She
has expanded her passion for horses by training, showing, breeding and managing
her miniature horse herd.”
Kristine’s FFA activities
also include dairy showmanship, livestock judging, hippology, public speaking
and leadership activities. Currently a junior at
Harvey
High School
, Kristine plans to enroll in the pre-veterinary medicine program at
North Dakota
State
University
upon graduation. Ultimately, she plans to become a large animal veterinarian
and practice near her hometown.
Kristine is the daughter of
Ronald and Tamara Keller of Esmond. The state sponsor for the Specialty
Animal Production Proficiency is the ND Buffalo Association.
The national sponsors are Land O’ Lakes Feed/Purina Mills and the
National FFA Foundation.

raising seed potatoes on her family farm on 20 acres.
She has achieved her goals for the project by raising a healthy crop of
state seed certified potatoes, learning new advanced procedures in the industry
and setting herself up to continue raising potatoes.
Jenna finds that these goals dovetail into her plans of going on to
college and returning to the family farm someday.
Prior to earning this award, Jenna has received the Star Greenhand award
participated in parliamentary procedure, food science, nursery landscape,
floriculture, agriculture sales and demonstration competitions.
She is currently serving as her chapter vice president and has attended
the FFA Washington Leadership Conference in
Washington
,
D.C.
Jenna is the daughter of Brian and Julie Vculek. Her
Oakes/Sargent Central FFA advisor is Dan Spellerberg. The state sponsors
for this award are David and Denise Swanson with a special $200 scholarship
provided by Dakota Growers Pasta. The
national sponsor is the National FFA Foundation.
Myhre
Knows “Clean Pig Sty” is Not an Oxymoron
Katie Myhre has been raising swine for nearly half her life. She began her
endeavor with four 4-H pigs; since then, she has expanded to a farrow-to-finish
operation. In the process, Katie has learned about feeding rations, watering,
vaccinations, medications and newborn healthcare, and also received a 2009
Supervised Agriculture Experience (SAE) grant from the ND FFA Foundation that
enabled her to purchase farrowing crates. Owning her own farrowing crates
simplified her operation, as she no longer has to transport sows and piglets
between her parent’s property and her neighbor’s farm, where she previously
took her sows to farrow. All this
work has won Katie the Swine Production Entrepreneurship Proficiency award at
the ND FFA State Convention.
“This facility on my farm makes it a lot easier to keep track of my
swine operation compared to transporting sows and pigs like I had to in the
past,” wrote Katie.
Katie sells her finished pigs to individuals and also to the John Morrell
buying station, which purchases animals on a percent muscle basis. She plans to
apply the profits from her swine operation toward her college education. Katie
plans to attend the North Dakota State College of Science for one-to-two years
before transferring to
North Dakota
State
University
’s pre-veterinary medicine program. After completing her studies at NDSU, she
plans to continue her education to become a large animal veterinarian.
“Katie has a passion for livestock,” wrote her Richland 44 FFA Chapter
advisor Tony Boehm. “She wants to work as a veterinarian and livestock
producer and is doing what she needs to do to prepare for that career.”
An honor roll student, Katie is a recent graduate of Richland 44
Junior/Senior High School where she has been active in sports, on the student
council, and in her community. She has been active in FFA for the past six years
and has participated in swine and beef production, livestock judging, small
animal care, food science, dairy foods, and floriculture competitions.
Katie has received numerous medals for livestock judging at the state and
local levels. She has served as an officer on her chapter board for four years,
most recently as chapter vice president.
Katie is the daughter of Earl and Vicki Myhre of Wahpeton. The state
sponsor for the Swine Production Entrepreneurship Proficiency awards the ND Pork
Council. The national sponsors are
LA-CO Markal and the National FFA Foundation.
Taylor Friesz, a senior this fall at
New
Salem
Almont
High School
, won the Swine Production Placement Proficiency award at the State FFA
Convention in
Fargo
,
ND
.
Taylor
started working on his proficiency records in 2008.
Taylor
’s
grandfather used to raise pigs, so his interested started there and has grown.
A few years ago his mother bought him a pig to show, and he found that he
really enjoyed showing and working with the pigs so he decided to continue.
Taylor
has discovered that hogs are really intelligent, quick learners and have great
personalities. He raises them to
show and then sells them so he doesn’t have them over the winter when he’s
engaged in sports and other activities through school.
Some of the skills
Taylor
has learned through this project are how to endure hard labor, increase his
ability in livestock judging, and keep up with daily chores.
Taylor has learned many skills as well, such as learning how to show
them, the care of sick hogs, facility maintenance, and the giving of monthly
shots.
Taylor
’s FFA advisor, Shawn Feiring, states in a reference letter, “
Taylor
is very active in our FFA chapter and takes his role as a leader very
seriously.
Taylor
is always willing to lend a hand and is currently our chapter president.”
Taylor
has
many goals but states that his production goal is to have twenty sows to farrow
out each year, and his educational goal is to attend NDSU after graduation.
He is undecided as to a major but still has another year to think about
it.
The Swine Production Placement Proficiency state awards are
sponsored by Dr. R Brent and Karla Young. The
national sponsors are Sunglo Feeds/Akey and the National FFA Foundation.
The ND State FFA Association is proud to announce the winner of the 2010
Turf Grass Management Proficiency award is Shyla Wettlaufer of the Bottineau FFA
Chapter. Shyla earned her award
during the ND State FFA Convention held in
Fargo
,
ND
. She is a graduate of
Bottineau
High School
and also served as her chapter’s reporter.
Shyla began her project as
an employee to her older brother’s lawn mowing service.
She began as his business manager and as-needed laborer.
As Shyla has moved into a partnership with her brother, the business has
grown to include more than 35 residential yards and commercial property,
including the local Wal-Mart. Their
operation has taught her the value of customer service, purchasing equipment
locally and advertising. She has
also learned that she can’t control a major factor in her business – the
weather. “If the weather and
Mother Nature do not provide good weather for grass to grow, then I don’t have
work, and our business doesn’t do well,”
said Shyla.
Besides her SAE project,
Shyla has kept very busy in FFA by participating in crop judging, food science
competition and land judging. She
plans to attend
Dakota
College
in Bottineau this fall and will continue her Wettlaufer LawnCare business.
Shyla’s parents are Jerry
and Joan Wettlaufer, and her father is also her FFA chapter advisor at
Bottineau
High School
.
The state sponsors for the Turf Grass Management Proficiency awards are
Agassiz Seed and Supply. The
national sponsor is John Deere.
Jordan Kauffman, a 2010
graduate of
Minot
High School
, recently won the Vegetable Production Proficiency award at the State FFA
Convention in
Fargo
,
ND
.
Jordan
began his gardening in 2006 and currently has a 60 x 90 vegetable garden.
He started his SAE program when his parents started to work in town.
Jordan
’s love of having fresh produce prompted him
to become fully involved in the production of fresh vegetables. He started
supplying produce to family and friends and then expanded his sales to a
downtown stand. He produces many types of vegetables but his main items are
tomatoes, green peppers and peas; in the fall he also produces pumpkins for
sale. He starts his plants from seeds and follows them through to harvest.
He has improved the watering system for his garden by placing soaker
hoses in the rows to gain an improved irrigation system.
Jordan
has been an active member of his FFA chapter
and his 4-H club. He has served in many officer capacities and was the chapter
president for 2009-2010. He was a member of the state-winning Nursery and
Floriculture Career Development Event teams, having the opportunity to compete
twice at the National FFA Convention.
Jordan
plans to further his education at college. His
advisor Tracey Hartwig says, “He shows initiative and is greatly respected by
his peers.”
The state sponsor for the Vegetable Production Proficiency awards is the
R. D. Offutt Company; the national sponsor is Monsanto Vegetable Seeds.
Lisburg
Sets Sights on Career in Veterinary Medicine
Mindy Lisburg’s interest
in veterinary medicine is a natural offshoot of growing up in the country with
lots of animals—visitors to her family’s acreage will find a number of
horses, cattle, pigs, cats and dogs. Mindy tested her potential career choice in
2008 by seeking employment at the Enderlin Veterinary Clinic. She was initially
hired to help in the kennels; over time her responsibilities have grown to
include prepping patients for surgery and, on occasion, scrubbing in to assist
the veterinarian. Mindy has also observed numerous surgeries and other
procedures, and developed a broad background of veterinary knowledge and
terminology.
“There are many
unpleasant jobs in veterinary medicine that many people do not like to do and
will change their minds as to their future vocation,” wrote Mindy’s
employer, Andrew Peterson, D.V.M. “Mindy has kept her mind on becoming a
veterinarian and never wavered when asked to do any of the tasks presented to
her. She has a dedication to the animals and a strong desire to learn.”
To earn her veterinary
degree, Mindy will spend eight years in college. She will begin her studies in
the pre-veterinary medicine program at
North Dakota
State
University
. Upon completing her studies at NDSU, she plans to attend
Iowa
State
University
to earn her degree in veterinary medicine. A recent graduate of
Central
Cass
High School
, Mindy has been active in FFA since her freshman year. She earned outstanding
freshman, sophomore and junior awards, has participated in State and National
FFA Conventions and District Leadership Conference, and has served as president
and an officer of the Central Cass FFA Chapter.
Mindy is the daughter of
Daniel and Ladonn Lisburg of Leonard.
The awards for this
proficiency are sponsored on the state level by the ND Veterinary Medical
Association and on the national level by the American Veterinary Medical
Association.
Dockter
Works on the Wild Side
“Having to be independent
and having to rely on myself to pay for things and get ready for work help me be
more responsible.” JaSondra Dockter’s description of achieving her first
goal for her Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) epitomizes the work ethic
common among FFA members. In addition to increasing her self-reliance and
responsibility, Jasondra sought to gain a better understanding of wildlife and
the natural resources that are in Central North Dakota. She also wanted to learn
more about the plants that are on the
North Dakota
prairie. The skills she learned and
work she accomplished has helped JaSondra become the state winner of the
Wildlife Production and Management Proficiency award at the State FFA
Convention.
During her SAE, JaSondra
spent long hours doing hard physical work as an employee of the Youth
Conservation Corps at the Chase Lake Wildlife Refuge. Her dedication to the
basic tasks she was given during her first year on the job paid off with more
advanced responsibilities in her second year. In addition to controlling noxious
weeks, JaSondra has worked with Global Positioning Systems, range plant
identification, predator control and data entry.
“JaShondra
showed leadership skills as the summer progressed by encouraging the other YCC
members to complete the job to the full extent,” wrote YCC Crew Leader Rodney
Gross in a letter recommending JaShondra for a leader position this summer.
“The safety of the other crew members was always the first thing on her mind,
and was greatly appreciated by all.”
JaShondra has been active
in FFA since 2005, and has participated in dairy cattle, lande, range, and
livestock judging; dairy cattle showmanship; and floriculture. She has earned
medals in competitions, participated in state and national FFA conventions, and
served as a chapter officer (most recently as chapter vice president).
JaShondra graduated from
Medina
Public School
in May. She plans to attend Bismarck State College where she will major in
general agriculture.
JaShonda is the daughter of
Scott and Melissa Dockter. The Wildlife Production and Management
Proficiency awards are sponsored on a state level by the ND Game and Fish
Department. The national sponsors
are Yamaha Motor Corporation
USA
and Land O’ Lakes Feed/Purina Mill.
