RUGBY FFA CHAPTER WINS STATE PARLIAMENTARY PROCEDURE EVENT

Bismarck, ND – There were shouts of joy at the state capitol as the winning team for the State FFA Parliamentary Procedure Contest was announced.  The excitement came from the Rugby FFA Chapter as they realized their goal of winning the state contest.  “The 6:30 AM practices really make a difference.  We’ve worked extremely hard towards this goal,” said Zach Rameden, chapter president.

The ND FFA Association hosted the State FFA Parliamentary Procedure competition in Bismarck at the state capitol Wednesday where teams got the opportunity to show how much they knew about Robert’s Rules of Order.  Once the teams were evaluated, awards were handed out, and the top four teams (Wishek, Napoleon, Rugby and Minot) competed for the winning place and a trip to the National FFA Convention where they compete with the top teams from each state.  “Parliamentary procedure is a very important skill,” said Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring, who attended the event and helps to sponsor the national team. “People who know how to effectively conduct public meetings have a head start in attaining leadership positions in organizations, communities and government at all levels.”

This is a very competitive Career Development Event; many FFA chapters have been practicing diligently since school started with the knowledge that only two teams from each of the eight districts compete at the state competition, and then only one of these sixteen teams have the honor of competing on a national scale. FFA State Officer Lucas Schmaltz, who competed at the National FFA Convention last year in this event, said, "The skills and content involved with this Career Development Event are not only lifelong, but they really help to show one of the many professional skills that our great organization has to offer."

Gold Award teams were from Rugby, Wishek, Turtle Lake/Mercer, Napoleon, and Minot .  Silver awards went to the teams from Beulah, New Salem, Kindred, Wyndmere, Killdeer, and Harvey .  Bronze awards went to Kenmare, Bowman County , Maddock, Williston, and Finley/Sharon.

The purpose of the parliamentary procedure event is to encourage the effective use of the official FFA opening and closing ceremonies and to provide recognition to the chapters excelling in the proper use of parliamentary procedure in conducting chapter meetings.

The FFA Association would like to thank the Pizza Corner in Valley City and the ND Department of Agriculture for sponsoring this event.
